| BROWN DAILY HERALD "an extremely amusing...laugh packed comedy..." THE NEW HAMPSHIRE "...rampantly gut busting moments... a visual laugh riot..."
Reviewed at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival "PUDDLE CRUISER" (Austin, TX) I hate to say this - and most of the anything remotely smacking of mainstream staff will revile me for it - but this was one of the funniest, most enjoyable films I've seen in a long time. So shoot me. Oh, don't get me wrong. There's literally nothing unique or innovative about "PUDDLE CRUISER," which is why I'm instinctively hesitant to gush about it. It's your basic antic-filled, Gen-X date flick; a younger version of any given "Friends" episode without the famous cast. Know what? I don't care. I laughed so hard, I about pissed myself. Written by and starring New York's Broken Lizard Comedy Group, this film bears a strong resemblance to such classic moron comedies as "Caddy Shack," "Stripes," and "Animal House." I can't think of anything deeper to say because there is nothing at all deep about this movie. Nor does it pretend that there is, which only adds to its naive charm. Just check your problems, your world issues and your attitude at the door and prepare to laugh your ass off! - Merle Bertrand
ORANGE SOURCE (Syracuse University) (Syracuse, NY) PUDDLE CRUISER Seldom does it come along that you meet a group of talented actors, producers and writers. Even more seldom is when these people stick together. Once in a lifetime do these people make it big in this immense and judgmental world. Broken Lizard is such a ground-breaking group of people. Broken Lizard is a comedy group born from the brilliant minds of another comedic bunch. It began in 1989 as Charred Goosebeak at Colgate University. After graduation, 5 of the comedians moved around for a while and came together in 1991 in NYC to form Broken Lizard. Performing on stage for a while, they then decided to take their show to the big screen. Puddle Cruiser was born. Puddle Cruiser is a movie almost any college student can relate to. The story starts out with 5 college guys, all friends, living at Colgate University. They are at a frat party when Felix (the main character and one of the only names I can remember) sees "the girl" and decides he wants her. He then experiences what we all have, meeting that someone and being almost rejected and immediately blown off. From there, Felix endures the thrill of the chase and then the way to create a "real" relationship that doesn't include "her" other boyfriend. Mix in a few kitchen raids, a bunch of completely insane friends including the one and only Freaky Reaky) with a dash of rugby to prove one's love and you've got the core elements of a movie that may someday rival Monty Python. This movie not only has a great cast and great laughs, but it is put together extremely well. The scenes seem to fall into place beautifully one after another in all too familiar classical college scenes. Not only did I love this movie, the whole audience did too. I did not see even one unhappy person leave the theater, even after the projectors kept breaking the film. If you didn't see this film, sorry, you missed out big time. This was a one chance deal. Tough luck. But one good thing is they are making more movies very soon. They might even bring Puddle Cruiser back later this year. My only advice to you is DEFINITELY, don't miss this movie again!!!! |
